In 1944, during the height of World War II, unsafe practices at the Port Chicago Naval Magazine led to an explosion that killed hundreds of sailors and civilians. A month later, the continuing unsafe conditions led not only to 258 African American servicemen refusing to load munitions and their subsequent court martial, but also to a deeper exploration of the discrimination against African Americans in the Naval service.

Join Ms. Carol Cherry, daughter of war hero Cyril O. Sheppard, for a powerful presentation on these historic events, including their final redemption last year when they were finally exonerated on the 80th anniversary of the disaster.

While you’re here, we’d love to take you on a tour.
