Recognition & Redemption: An Exploration Of The Port Chicago 50 Presented By Carol Cherry – The Sheridan At Oak Brook

In 1944, during the height of World War II, unsafe practices at the Port Chicago Naval Magazine led to an explosion that killed hundreds of sailors and civilians. A month later, the continuing unsafe conditions led not only to 258 African American servicemen refusing to load munitions and their subsequent court martial, but also to a deeper exploration of the discrimination against African Americans in the Naval service.
